Teatro Comunale di Bologna
The new Teatro Comunale will be an exchange between the 17th century portion and the adjoining addition, with a bistrot that is always open, the possibility to view musical and performance rehearsals, a revolutionary take on the entire area that involves Via del Guasto and Piazza Verdi.
The project includes an extension on Via del Guasto, where, following the demolition of the piezometric tower and some low bodies, there will be a new entrance. Also on the ground floor will be the new box office, bistro and rehearsal room, while the second floor will provide a link between the existing offices and the new workspaces. The back of the theater will directly overlook the Giardini del Guasto with a large visual opening of the rehearsal room to the public space.
The new body will be distinct from the historic part in form and materials, while recomposing the volumes and alignments envisioned in 1935 in the creation of the portico and terrace, to which it will reconnect with a new outdoor space on the roof. The building will consist of a low, glazed volume that defines a new circulation and a new way of approaching the building. A light metal envelope will cover the interior functions that need more opaque protection, creating a small urban lantern, capable of lighting the area with a soft but present light during the night hours.
The internal reorganization of functions and connections allows the theater to become a new citywide attraction, offering, in addition to the traditional activity, spaces and cultural events throughout the year. The intervention aims to increase the functionality of the Theater, enhancing its historical part and increasing its usability by people with reduced mobility. New high-efficiency and sustainable plant engineering will contribute to a rationalization of energy consumption and related costs.
