Our Ethos

At Open Project, we believe that we have the responsibility to promote creative processes that respond to the challenges posed by climate change, resource depletion and environmental degradation. Being aware of both the urgency and severity of such challenges, we are committed to the definition of actions and strategies lead to creating viable alternative development models.

We recognise that reducing energy efficiency and energy saving, which has been the main focus both nationally and globally, is only one of the key aspect to be considered within a sustainability-oriented design approach.

Our commitment

Firstly, we commit to minimise the GHG emissions associated to our projects. We are doing this by measuring the environmental impact due to the whole life-cycle of the buildings we design, i.e. not only those produced during its use, but also those linked to its construction and future disposal.

This requires anticipating and impacting the entire life cycle of buildings via strategic design decisions, including those that increase buildings’ longevity and flexibility, the choice of building materials, components and structural systems.

Secondly, we commit to treasure the physical and psychological well-being of perspective occupants and give those a central place among the design requirements. By measuring and improving the environmental qualities of indoor and outdoor spaces.
Furthermore, we minimise resource waste and foster circularity. There are many other points to consider and they include waste reduction, efficient use of materials and resources, reduction of land consumption and use of mobility with low environmental impact, made mostly from recycled and low-carbon materials, and minimising consumption during use.

Finally, we design with adaptation and on the other hand by preparing the adaptation of these buildings to the major events affecting the climate, such as heat waves and storm rains / flash.

Open Project Sustainability Hub

Open Project Sustainability Hub (OPSHub) applied research team works closely with our designers to define strategies, methods and in-depth tools to respond credibly and concretely to current and future sustainability challenges.

These processes are now all part of our approach, allowing us to offer an integrated design approach to maximise the benefit of bioclimatic measures, meeting expectations for visual and thermal comfort indoors and microclimatic comfort outdoors. At the same time, we are able to reduce climate-relevant emissions throughout the life cycle of buildings and comply with the “Do No Significant Harm” principle, an integral part of the NRP and cornerstone of the EU Taxonomy, to ensure the sustainability of financial investments.
